With the countdown now on to the next Deepings Raft Race, people are being urged to get involved as volunteers and gain all the positives that come with it.
Further volunteer stewards and marshals are being sought to put in two hour shifts on event day – Sunday, August 5. The event, which sees groups racing homemade rafts along the River Welland in Market Deeping, raised more than £8,000 for good causes last year. Around 30 marshals/stewards are needed on the day.
Tracy Hollis, of Werrington, Peterborough, joined Deepings Raft Race Committee in 2013 having been part of a team entering a raft into the event since 2007. She became secretary in 2014.
She said: “I thoroughly enjoy working with a wonderful team of committee members and volunteers who are fully committed to putting on the best event that we possibly can.
“Through the event I have met and become friends with some fantastic people. I have grown in confidence as a person and the event has educated me in community awareness and I fully appreciate the amount of dedication and hard work it takes to put on this successful event.
“Marshalling and stewarding is a huge part of the raft race and we rely on the volunteers to enable us to put on the event. I would encourage people to become involved in the raft race as a volunteer as it involves you in the community and you learn so much about people and working as a team. The volunteers are able to engage with the rafters and spectators and have fun. The whole day is thoroughly enjoyed by all including the volunteers.”
Marshals and stewards man road closures, assist in the main areas answering questions from spectators and point people in the right direction.
They are given brochures containing the event information and details of important contacts. Each volunteer gets a high visibility vest and drinks voucher and once their shift is finished, they are free to enjoy the event with family and friends. Volunteers can be paired with friends if desired.
Other ways to get involved including entering a raft team, becoming a sponsor, booking a stall, volunteering as a marshal or simply attending the event.
For the best view of the rafts and the race, be at Bridge Street, Deeping St James between 11am and 2pm.
Cheer the rafts past the finish line at Boundary Green, Main Street, Market Deeping between 1.15pm and 3pm.
There will be a large selection of stalls and a funfair all day in High Street, Market Deeping.
